Soundtrack to September

Best music news this month – we got tickets to see Gillian Welch.

Album of the Month

Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy with Harem Scarem and Alex Neilson, Is it the Sea?

I’ve been listening to a lot of good stuff this month, but I think I most enjoyed rediscovering this live album from Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and some friends.  I usually listen to the also excellent Summer in the Southeast and, for some reason, tend forget about this, even though I might prefer it to the other one.  Will Oldham is a great reinterpreter of his own songs and the production on this is wonderful.  The three and four part harmonies are heart stopping.

Best of the rest

Track of the Month

One from my childhood and which seems appropriate at the moment

The Seekers, ‘Turn, turn, turn’

Lyrics

Chorus:
To everything, turn, turn, turn,
There is a season, turn, turn, turn,
And a time for every purpose under heaven.

A time to be born, a time to die,
A time to plant, a time to reap,
A time to kill, a time to heal,
A time to laugh, a time to weep.

Chorus

A time to build up, a time to break down,
A time to dance, a time to mourn,
And a time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together.

Chorus

A time of love, a time of hate,
A time of war, a time of peace
And a time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing.

Chorus

A time to gain, a time to lose,
A time to rend, a time to sew,
A time to love, a time to hate,
A time for peace, I swear it’s not too late.
